Hello, I am trying to get a ATI 9600 video card working with SUSE 9. So far I have installed the latest ATI driver from here ... http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/linux/radeon-linux.html?type=linux&prodType=graphic&prod=productsLINUXdriver&submit.x=12&submit.y=7&submit=GO%21 and followed the ATI install to the letter. But... now yast does not allow the resolution to be set. I can do it using the fglrxconfig routine i8n a sh, but not with yast. yast screws up the screen when started and forces a re-boot to straighten it out again. 3d does not work. fglrxinfo diplays an error that says ... Xlib: connection tp ":0.0" refused by server. Anyone get a ATI 9600 working with SUSE 9? how? tb

This has been mentioned several times already on this list, you might want to search the mail archives for many of your answers. Had you actually read the instructions included with the ATI drivers, you might find that you could no longer use the conventional means of setting resolutions, 3d, etc for your card. Furthermore, in trying to do so, you lose those things the driver tried to do after installing. The 9600 is supported natively by SuSE 9.0, so there is no real need to use the ATI drivers as the kernel module is already present for 3d and using the card. Sax2 will configure everything for you. YaST2 is good and getting better, but using sax2 is the better choice. You might try removing the ATI rpm and dropping down to init 3 to use sax2, but it's a good possibility you have things wanky trying to mix the two. Nice thing about Linux is that it can be fixed. .... I actually read the ATI installation stuff. Yes I know that you need to use |*fglrxconfig *|to set it up and I did manage to wade through it.. But the ATI installation info doesn't say you can't use yast. Searching through the email data month by month is not the easiest way to go. Does SUSE have a email search function? I couldn't figure it out. Some people are new to this.

I guess that is why the card was detected at install and immediately did a black screen. So I don't know what supported means. After re-boot with the big red switch, at least something came up on the screen. But the keyboard and other settings were not done correctly. Probably because of the crash. After fiddling, the screen stayed up, but the 3d did not work after the initial install. So if this is supported I don't know what not supported means.

Don't have a clue what you are talking about here. How do I remove the new ATI driver? SUSE just said get the latest driver from ATI and hasn't returned my inquiry what to do next. BTW windowsXP loves the same card on the same machine and it preforms flawlessly. But then again maybe just taking the whole pile back to BB would be better. tb

Hi, I have in one PC ATI 9200 and in another PC ATI 9600. Both are working right out of the box on SUSE 9.0. Maybe manufacturer of your card messed something. B.t.w., why one or another person is scaring the list with fact that he will return to Microsoft stuff? I don't get the point? If you wanna use MS, please do it. If you wanna use Linux, thats OK. Ask questions about Linux. But, please, do not end your questions like kudzo127234 just did. -- Audrius Verseckas SuSE Linux User

I agree here. If you don't like the way things function with linux you are free to go back to MS. No one is holding you hostage. The biggest problem linux is getting the manufacturers to produce drivers for their hardware. This -is not- the fault of linux. The programmers are doing their best to produce drivers for hardware that the manufacturer is reluctant to (should) do themselves. It is hard to be current when the company making the product refuses to provide info for the device. Patience is a virtue when it comes to linux. A driver will be available eventually even if has to be done the hard way. -- Ken Schneider unix user since 1989 linux user since 1994 SuSE user since 1998 (6.2)

Instead you just hope rude responses will get you results. As you can see from other replies, that doesn't work so well. So take a deep breath, count to 10 and ask your questions. If you are not sure what to ask, then say so and most here will try to be helpful. I will assume that when you say detected, you mean it started with the install screen and then went blank? Probably a problem somewhere else if that was the case. Who makes your card? Is it ATI or just ATI graphic chip?

Did you read those as well as you did the ATI instructions? If you installed via RPM, then you can uninstall with RPM. If not certain, the do "man rpm" from a shell/konsole. To speed

[...] things up, try "rpm -e" ! ---------- list, but a Linux list. All the ATI cards work as well in Linux too, if setup correctly and you don't have to install 100mb of driver software to get it to either! ATI supports and works with Linux probably closer than any other graphics card maker right now, so even though they might not answer your mails, they do support Linux. If you don't feel you are ready for the elegance of Linux yet, then stay with your winXP, but you'll be missing out on a lot of nice things if you do.
