I think it wasn't until 8.2 that it looked at the rpm db.
OK, I more or less skipped 8.0 and 8.1 (except on one or two systems) and wnet fro 7.3 to 8.2 / 9.0 on most of my boxes (my in this case meaning the ones I admin, not the ones I own ;) ) so indeed, I just got lucky .. I don;t think I've ever used the yast2 on 8.0 and 8.1 (except maybe to change some system settings) . Didn't 8.0 and 8.1 still also supply old style yast ? I know the 8.0 and 8.1 boxes I've only ever fiddled with remotely (over an ssh connection) so I for sure have not used the gui/qt based yast flavour on those. And over ssh rpm -Uvh is much quicker to us ...
But yes, rpm -Uvh <filename> or yast -i <filename> are possible options. There Thanks to you both
