The first time I tried it, X wouldn't go, so I tried it again on your suggestions.
Interestingly, I mistakenly(?) misconfigured the mouse (I put /dev/psaux), and X stayed up for a bit longer (5-10 minutes?). But then it froze up. When I put the mouse to /dev/mouse, it was back to the same old 20-30 seconds then crash.
The mouse is a USB mouse with a scroll wheel if that matters.
Thanks, Eric Pierce

Eric, Might I suggest something, if you haven't already tried it, why don't you do a fresh install of SuSE to see if you can clear up this problem? With as much time and stress you have put into it already, a fresh install about a week ago might have cured your problem. Also, I agree with Michael, put a ps/2 adapter on that usb mouse and see if it doesn't work better.
