Looks like the new OpenOffice RC due in a few days has notable improvements in this area.

This is indeed good news. I can't seem to find any mention of a pending RC release on OO Forums. Is it confirmed? I ask simply because I've had 0 luck trying to install OO 1.1b2 on 8.2. Keep getting an infernal error when running the install script, "Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: Protocol not supported by server".
Install fails to install anything to /opt/.. at that point.
If you are trying to install as root while in X as yourself then you have to use sux to change to root so you can execute and use X apps which includes installers such as the OO or SO installer. If your not root then you can't install anything into /opt. So I would open an xterm and type sux then type your root password in ...and THEN give it a try. I know the newest beta of OO works and so does SO 6.x because I've got them both installed and they run just fine. :) Give that a shot.
