StarOffice and OpenOffice unusable in KDE on 8.2
Greetings, I have just installed StarOffice 6.0 and Openoffice 1.0 on my SuSE 8.2 system. Both are unusable in KDE - they basically take forever to even respond to mouse input. Almost like they hang, but not quite. But they both run fine in Gnome. All other applications run fine. What could cause this? Something in the distributed kernel. They run fine on a vanilla 2.4.21 kernel.

Look for any processes using a lot of or close to 100% CPU. When the system isn't loaded, then OOo/StarOffice will run OK. Have a look at top, or Ctrl-Esc in KDE. See Openoffice.org bug 9277: http://www.openoffice.org/project/www/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=9277 IIRC, it's something to do with the threading in OOo reacting with the newer scheduler in kernel 2.5.x and SuSE 2.4.20. Using a vanilla 2.4.x kernel (like 2.4.21) will cure the problem at the expense of loosing the enhancements SuSE make on their kernel. Looks like the new OpenOffice RC due in a few days has notable improvements in this area. HTH, Jason

-- This is indeed good news. I can't seem to find any mention of a pending RC release on OO Forums. Is it confirmed? I ask simply because I've had 0 luck trying to install OO 1.1b2 on 8.2. Keep getting an infernal error when running the install script, "Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: Protocol not supported by server". Install fails to install anything to /opt/.. at that point. Cheers! Kirby

If you are trying to install as root while in X as yourself then you have to use sux to change to root so you can execute and use X apps which includes installers such as the OO or SO installer. If your not root then you can't install anything into /opt. So I would open an xterm and type sux then type your root password in ...and THEN give it a try. I know the newest beta of OO works and so does SO 6.x because I've got them both installed and they run just fine. :) Give that a shot. Not officially AFAIK. There was mention of it on the OOo user's mailing list yesterday. But of course I'm just passing on rumour, so could be completely wrong ;-) Keep an eye on the OOo website...

Sounds like you're trying to install into /opt when you're a normal user. You need to be root to do that. When you do the initial "setup -net", ensure you are in a root teminal. In Konsole or xterm, type 'sux' to allow you to start X programs as root. Then type "setup -net" from the OOo install directory. After it is installed, exit, then cd to where you installed OOo (e.g. /opt/OpenOffice.org1.1/programs) and run the setup as an ordinary user. Works for me, anyway. Jason
Problem solved. Turns out that the KWiFiManager applet does something that causes this problem. The problem disappeared after I stopped using KWiFiManager. /POL On Fri, 2003-06-27 at 17:46, Per-Olof Litby (Reg'l Mgr - Nordic/Baltic - Java Web Services - Sun Microsystems) wrote:

Interesting but I had the same problem without using KWiFi. I was using SETI which I had to change to a nice=19 in order to get SO or OO to work even close to reasonable. I suspect you haven't solved the problem, but that KWifi was using a lot of your CPU resources and you've simply cut down on the usage. The problem is most likely still there.
