Also, go to the Linux Documentation Project and they're are HOWTOs about how to get Quake and Doom up and running. Essentially you need the CDs and then create the directories, etc.... It goes through the steps. One note, some of the things mentioned have become outdated insofar as that a couple of the files they refer to are not the same in on CDs from later releases of the game.
Any way have a look and see if it doesn't help.
For Doom, checkout prboom (i think it's on sourceforge, but google can help you) quake and quake2 do a google search for quakeforge. I've ran all 3 (prboom,and quake&quake2 from quakeforge) . prboom has suse rpms Im not sure if quakeforge has rpms, I installed them from source (but the README is really clear on how to do that. Personally I like prboom (or simply doom) a lot better than quake ..
