ok, this is making me nuts, i wanna play Doom and Quake on Linux!! (not Doom or Quake 2 or 3 but the originals i played in DOS a like 3 years ago) but all i can get is the source, iv never installed from source before, can anyone tell me what site they downloaded and how they installed and started playing these games? i mean i really wanna buy em but well, im still learning and stores here have neither game. Any help would be much appreciated, so if anyone could help me get Doom and or Quake installed on here id appreciate it alot. -- Kill the lights, let the candles burn behind the pumpkins’ mischievous grins, And let the skeletons dance. Could you post the URL at which you found the source code for these games? That is fairly interesting in itself.

The source for both games can be found at id's site: ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/source Note that this is the source for the game engines, only. You would still need the data files from the shareware or full versions to actually play them.

I'd suggest doing a search over at Freshmeat, which pulls up a few ports of each to Linux.
Also, go to the Linux Documentation Project and they're are HOWTOs about how to get Quake and Doom up and running. Essentially you need the CDs and then create the directories, etc.... It goes through the steps. One note, some of the things mentioned have become outdated insofar as that a couple of the files they refer to are not the same in on CDs from later releases of the game. http://www.tldp.org Any way have a look and see if it doesn't help. For Doom, checkout prboom (i think it's on sourceforge, but google can help you) quake and quake2 do a google search for quakeforge. I've ran all 3 (prboom,and quake&quake2 from quakeforge) . prboom has suse rpms Im not sure if quakeforge has rpms, I installed them from source (but the README is really clear on how to do that. Personally I like prboom (or simply doom) a lot better than quake ..
