Usually this is true about running the mk_initrd after kernel rpm installs. However, when I tried to install the mantel updated k_athlon-2.4.18-167 kernel I did it from init level 3 and manually ran the rpm -Uvh command. I was surprised to see that after installing the updated kernel it appeared to automatically run the "mk_initrd" command since I saw the same output I see if I run it myself. I think this might be something they're trying to aurtomate or I could have just been watching something else happening that had a similar output one might see if they were to run "mk_initrd". Nope. After you install the kernel pkg with rpm then you must run mk_initrd and lilo to complete the process.
