That's what I had heard too. That's the reason I stuck with the SMP
kernel to update with. However, I'm still stuck at the point where the
screen prints 'loading linux............' and then just hangs. It
doesn't even attempt to boot.
Any ideas as to what my be the problem, or should I just remove the SMP
kernel and use the standard 2.4.18-4GB and update from that.

There was a mini-benchmark published recently on the advantage of hyper
threading. Apparently you can get something like 30% better performance
compared to a single cpu kernel if you use SMP with ht. Up to 50%
increases in the 2.5.x development series was also mentioned.
So if it's possible to get SMP working I'd say it's worth it.
