This is strange. Has anyone come across this before? I did a complete fresh install of SuSE 8.0 pro. When complete I entered the OS with no problems. Just to make sure I rebooted went back into the newly installed OS again. Everything was fine. I then downloaded the latest 2.4.19 kernel from mantel from 'ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel/next/RPM/k_smp-2.4.19-204.i586.rpm ' (I am running a p4 and the current kernel detected this and installed smp. Uname gave '2.4.18-64GB-smp' or whatever, I can't remember the exact syntax). OK, with no drivers installed, still running a completely fresh install, I opened up kpackage and using the mantel kernel, I updated the current one. I then rebooted to check the new kernel, the screen initializes with 'loading linux.......' then it just hangs. If I try running the 'linux - safe settings' the same thing happens. Whats happened here? I was under the impression the rpm file did everything required to fully update the kernel. Did I miss something, do I need to alter some configuration files? Help : / thanks

It's for machines with more then one proc in them. I would boot off the CD telling it to boot installed system. It will use the kernel on the CD. Then I would replace the SMP kernel with the one called k_deflt because this would be for single proc machines. Your problems will most likely disappear, but because you are using Mantel's 2.4.19 kernel on an 8.0 system..you may have to update some other pkgs to get everything running up to spec. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. I too have tried the kernel in Mantel's folders without luck. I tried the k_deflt and had the same results in a laptop. -- Ken Schneider Senior UNIX Administrator Network Administrator 21st Century Oncology, Inc. 239-931-7350 (help desk) 239-931-7383 (fax) kschneider@rtsx.com
Thanks for the info.....just one more point to clarify. When the SuSE installation program ran, it installed the SMP kernel (2.4.18-64GB-SMP). It runs fine on this, (I belive there is some new technology in the Pentiums, I saw a few posts about it recently on here) It won't let me install the k_deflt kernel due to the current SMP kernel being used. Do I need to alter the original Kernel from the SMP to the intel optimized kernel. Then I can update with the k_deflt? If so is this possible from the current state I am in? Also, if it ran the SMP kernel prior, why will it not run now? I found these two links to try and help me fet to grips with it, but I found myself clutching a straws...hehe http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/fhassel_p4.html http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/jsj_smpkernel_70.html Thanks -----Original Message----- From: Ben Rosenberg [mailto:ben@whack.org] Sent: Friday, January 17, 2003 7:33 PM To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: Re: [SLE] mantel kernel update * Gedi (gedi@ntlworld.com) [030117 11:22]: ::This is strange. There was a mini-benchmark published recently on the advantage of hyper
threading. Apparently you can get something like 30% better performance
compared to a single cpu kernel if you use SMP with ht. Up to 50%
increases in the 2.5.x development series was also mentioned.
So if it's possible to get SMP working I'd say it's worth it.

That's what I had heard too. That's the reason I stuck with the SMP
kernel to update with. However, I'm still stuck at the point where the
screen prints 'loading linux............' and then just hangs. It
doesn't even attempt to boot.
Any ideas as to what my be the problem, or should I just remove the SMP
kernel and use the standard 2.4.18-4GB and update from that.

Did you run lilo after you updated the kernel? You are using 8.0 with the default lilo I presume. Also, you would need to cp /boot/vmlinuz /boot/vmlinuz.suse to get the safe setting to boot. Boot from your CD and boot installed system and run lilo. -- Joe & Sesil Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. One thing you apparently missed is that the kernels in people/mantel are
development kernels. They are there for testing purposes only. They
usually work, but there are no guarantees. There's sometimes new patches
being tested in those. I wouldn't rely on them if I were you.
