A big thankyou to John Pettigrew for this simple fix, reposted here for those that might have missed it: "Type "nautilus" into a console. Go to Edit>Preferences and then choose the Desktop & Trash option. Deselect "Use Nautilus to draw your desktop" and close. If that was the problem, you'll find that you are back to the KDE desktop." No need to delete anything, all I needed to do was log out and back in to clear the wallpaper and there was KDE in all its glory.
