With the out put of strace I found the file /root/.synaptic/filters. In comparing it to another running version of synaptic it turned out to be quite a bit larger (23MB or so). I saved the current version to filters.bk and copied over the smaller file. Synaptic then started and is working ok. Brian Marr On Thursday 03 October 2002 19:07, Brian Marr wrote:

This box was previously using Synaptic 0.16. and successfully upgraded a number of software packages. Does anyone have any suggestions ?
Try investigating with strace and see where synaptic stops: # strace /usr/sbin/synaptic
