Suse 8.0 synaptic-0.24-rb1.i386.rpm apt-0.5.4cnc3-1cl.i386.rpm apt-devel-0.5.4cnc3-1cl.i386.rpm One of my Linux boxes has a problem with Synaptic. It looks like I have stuffed up somewhere. I have tried reinstalling but cannot get past building the dependency tree. It stops there and just hangs. Apt get is working on the command line. It will do Apt-get update without any problems. This is all I have tried so far. I have put in the preferences file with touch /etc/apt/ preferences. This box was previously using Synaptic 0.16. and successfully upgraded a number of software packages. Does anyone have any suggestions ? Brian Marr

Is the space before preferences a typo in the email, or the actual command used? If the latter, that may be the problem. Otherwise, I would suggest using the latest apt and apt-devel packages. -- Joe & Sesil Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. It is a typo. I just checked - I have used apt-0.5.4cnc7-2cl.i386.rpm apt-devel-0.5.4cnc7-2cl.i386.rpm Brian Mar On Wednesday 02 October 2002 09:10, Joe & Sesil Morris (NTM) wrote:

Try investigating with strace and see where synaptic stops: # strace /usr/sbin/synaptic -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless
As suggested I enclose the end log of strace synaptic. Hope it helps. With the out put of strace I found the file /root/.synaptic/filters. In comparing it to another running version of synaptic it turned out to be quite a bit larger (23MB or so). I saved the current version to filters.bk and copied over the smaller file. Synaptic then started and is working ok. Brian Marr On Thursday 03 October 2002 19:07, Brian Marr wrote:
