Finally got the X Server out of the boot message by using insserv -r /etc/init.d/xfs per info from Suse website on XFree86 4.2. Still have problem of not being able to do gui login. If I try XDM, it still will not accept keyboard input, but at least now I can do cntrl +alt +del to get out of it. Check out the README for XF4.2. For some reason, XFS automatically starts after this upgrade (regardless of rc.config setting) There are instructions as to how to stop this.
