I have to buy a modem , and the models I`m considering are : - Best Buy WSC 56k ext. Rockwell V92 - Best Buy EASYCOMM 56 U (USB) - Diamond Supra Express 56E MEMORY
It's worth keeping in mind that Diamond Multimedia won't be providing further flash upgrades for the 56e Memory (http://www.diamondmm.com/default.asp?menu=support&submenu=Modems&item=v92_c ompatibility). In any case within six months of buying a 56e Memory its v90 capacity had disappeared, and I gather from speaking to Diamond engineers that this isn't uncommon. PC Pro had this to say about the 56e Pro (essentially the Memory without its answering machine facility) in a comparative review:
When it comes to performance, the 56ePRO only did well in the BMP file test. The rest of the files proved too much, and left it firmly at the bottom of the pile.
From experience, even when connected to a CVX rack (to which its chipset should be well suited), the throughput was mediocre. I'd advise for a US Robotics modem, notwithstanding their Professional Message's undocumented "quirk" -- http://lists.suse.com/archives/suse-linux-e/2001-Nov/2692.html.
