I don't know any of them, the most important thing to look for with a modem is that it isn't a winmodem. They usually don't work under Linux. This is a great site for modems: http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html. Follow the link that says "View the entire table". Regards, Martijn

Hi Hugo, I don't know any of the above modems. The only thing I would strongly recommend is that you DO NOT purchase an internal modem. Although the internal modems are cheaper, they are generally more trouble than they are worth. Exterrnal modems have the following advantages:- - if the modem locks up you can turn the power off to reset it. - You can see what is happening by the lights on the modem - They are not winmodems. - Easier to setup. (no irq conflicts, etc) - etc. Regards, Graham Smith ----------------------------------------

It's worth keeping in mind that Diamond Multimedia won't be providing further flash upgrades for the 56e Memory (http://www.diamondmm.com/default.asp?menu=support&submenu=Modems&item=v92_c ompatibility). In any case within six months of buying a 56e Memory its v90 capacity had disappeared, and I gather from speaking to Diamond engineers that this isn't uncommon. PC Pro had this to say about the 56e Pro (essentially the Memory without its answering machine facility) in a comparative review:
When it comes to performance, the 56ePRO only did well in the BMP file test. The rest of the files proved too much, and left it firmly at the bottom of the pile.
From experience, even when connected to a CVX rack (to which its chipset should be well suited), the throughput was mediocre. I'd advise for a US Robotics modem, notwithstanding their Professional Message's undocumented "quirk" -- http://lists.suse.com/archives/suse-linux-e/2001-Nov/2692.html.

I am using a USR 56K Performance Pro modem, it works well. Make sure the modem you get is a hardware or "controller" modem if internal. Software or "winmodems" tend to be unreliable and often are not supported at all in Linux. They're cheaper; but since only a few work at all in Linux and they are slow and unreliable they aren't worth it.

Having been working with modems here in Germoney for almost 18 years, I can strongly suggest you to buy US ROBOTICS, they have been working fine with my bbs during all the 80s and 90s and I never had to complain. Also with ZyXEL I have always been content. But do never buy shit like Winmodems or cheap-stuff. I always disappoints you when it comes to reliability and heat problems. So, to become concrete on this: If you prefer GOOD voice options: ZyXEL 2864 is your choice If you want to have EVERY mode there is for whatever purpose and what to drive like Porsche, the USR V.Everything is your friend These modems are also available with ISDN and/or server extensions. Except of course for US Robotic's line of Winmodems; they were actually the first to invent the darned things. I agree though, the rest of their product line has excellent quality.

Ah, another former (?) sysop!
If cost is an issue, my LT modem works great with the appropriate driver. Arthur H. Johnson II arthur@linuxbox.nu The Linux Box http://www.linuxbox.nu On Wed, 28 Nov 2001, Joshua Lee wrote:

Hello, I dont know about the full consequences / upgradeability to the V92 standards. But for a brick, you cannot go wrong with the ubiquitiuos ELSA Microlink Office External Modem. I own one, that works as my back-up for dial-ups when broadband stutters. Also handles voice messages and fax storage beautifully. Heck ,SuSE even has on disc, software to manipulate it superbly.
