Hi, I am currently running 7.0 under a 2.4.0 kernel I compiled from the kernel.org sources. This is the first kernel I have compiled and many hard but useful lessons were learned, especially concerning modules. One problem is, however, that I cannot use the 2.4 version of ppp because (I believe), of some SuSE-specific settings concerning pppd. Kernel 2.4.0 is the last version that can use the older 2.3 ppp that works with SuSE 7.0. I want to move forward with kernel developments, not least because sooner or later they will fix it so that my IBM ATA 100 hdd will work at full speed. I have found on the SuSE ftp site, under SuSE 7.0 kernel section, the file kdflt_24_2.4.2-4.i386.rpm. I am downloading it as I type. This looks like it ought to be a 2.4.2 kernel for 7.0 (though I do not know what the "24" refers to), and I wonder whether the rpm also contains a fix for the pppd problem. Has anyone installed this kernel and/or can anyone advise me whether it fixes the pppd problem and generally as to the best way to go about installing it whilst still being able to retreat to my existing (hard won), setup if anything goes wrong ?
