Upgrading 7.0 to kernel 2.4.2 via SuSE's rpm
Hi, I am currently running 7.0 under a 2.4.0 kernel I compiled from the kernel.org sources. This is the first kernel I have compiled and many hard but useful lessons were learned, especially concerning modules. One problem is, however, that I cannot use the 2.4 version of ppp because (I believe), of some SuSE-specific settings concerning pppd. Kernel 2.4.0 is the last version that can use the older 2.3 ppp that works with SuSE 7.0. I want to move forward with kernel developments, not least because sooner or later they will fix it so that my IBM ATA 100 hdd will work at full speed. I have found on the SuSE ftp site, under SuSE 7.0 kernel section, the file kdflt_24_2.4.2-4.i386.rpm. I am downloading it as I type. This looks like it ought to be a 2.4.2 kernel for 7.0 (though I do not know what the "24" refers to), and I wonder whether the rpm also contains a fix for the pppd problem. Has anyone installed this kernel and/or can anyone advise me whether it fixes the pppd problem and generally as to the best way to go about installing it whilst still being able to retreat to my existing (hard won), setup if anything goes wrong ? the _24 is part of the package name: kdflt_24

WHAT ppp problem
I use wvdial and the problem I had manifested in two ways. (1) When I tried to connect using ppp 2.4.0 I got "undefined symbol chap_passwd_hook" then "Couldn't load /usr/lib/passwordfd.so". (2) For a time, when I *think* (pathetic I know), that my setup was kernel 2.4.1 and ppp 2.4.0 I did not get the "chap_passwd-hook" error, but instead I saw "unrecognized option replacedefaultroute. These problems go away if I stick with ppp 2.3.xx. The wizards on comp.os.ppp told me it was probably a SuSE-specific thing. I think the solution to this was mentioned on the list before. Try uninstalling the package called ppp_ssl - it may just work... stranger things have happened.

Thanks for the response Chris. I checked ppp_ssl, but it is not installed. Regards, Geoff _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com

OK. How about having a look at the short thread started by this message, and see if you can see how it applies to you: http://lists.suse.com/archives/suse-linux-e/2001-Feb/1117.html Bye, Chris -- __ _ -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Chris Reeves /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ICQ# 22219005 _\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\
