Howdy,
We have a server we're about to take to a remote office. We need to be able to administer it remotely, so we're going to have to set it up as a dial in server with a modem. I have absolutely no experience with dialup servers in any OS, so I wonder if anyone has any advise?
Use an external modem and mgetty. Quite simple.
Also which package is best?
mgetty I use it at home. It receives data calls, so I can login from work and also recieves faxes. I believe it can even work as an answering machine, but I never bothered.
The goal is simply to be able to get a shell remotely.
So, install mgetty. This is a special getty for modems. It waits for a connection and starts the login process. If you have a working modem at the other end, you can connect with minicom (or someother program) and work on it as you would on the console of your own machine. Regards, Cees.
