How can I set up a dial-up server (one connection, not an ISP)
Howdy, We have a server we're about to take to a remote office. We need to be able to administer it remotely, so we're going to have to set it up as a dial in server with a modem. I have absolutely no experience with dialup servers in any OS, so I wonder if anyone has any advise? Also which package is best? The goal is simply to be able to get a shell remotely. Use an external modem and mgetty. Quite simple.

mgetty I use it at home. It receives data calls, so I can login from work and also recieves faxes. I believe it can even work as an answering machine, but I never bothered.

So, install mgetty. This is a special getty for modems. It waits for a connection and starts the login process. If you have a working modem at the other end, you can connect with minicom (or someother program) and work on it as you would on the console of your own machine. Regards, Cees.

If you have a free machine that you want to dedicate to the task, use FREESCO (www.freesco.org), which gives you an absolute minimal linux installation (fits on a floppy) and is relatively easy to set up as a small, secure dial in/out router/firewall.
