This won't work. You need to have a file system on a new partition and mount that partition to some point. Copying root file system with tar is tricky, you have your new partition to be mounted, i.e. under /, so you have to list explicitly what directories under / you're going to copy, excluding mount point for a new partition.
Then one could use find / -mount -print0 | afio -p0 /mountpoint/of/new/root/partition Ciao, Stefan
