tar syntax ___________ Does someone know the correct syntax, please ?
(cd / ;tar -cf -.) | (cd /dev/new_HD/ ;tar -xpf - --same-owner)
This won't work. You need to have a file system on a new partition and mount that partition to some point. Copying root file system with tar is tricky, you have your new partition to be mounted, i.e. under /, so you have to list explicitly what directories under / you're going to copy, excluding mount point for a new partition. The easiest way, I think, is to boot from some rescue system, mount your old / and new partition at some points and them tar copy them. -Kastus

Then one could use find / -mount -print0 | afio -p0 /mountpoint/of/new/root/partition Ciao, Stefan
