Hi Ben,
Yes, we have a version of SuSE for Sparc based systems. It's labeled 7.0 but is our first step towards Sun hardware. It's pretty damn stable and if your system is 64 bit then you will be able to install a 64 bit system. 7.0 is only available through OEM's and from our FTP site. When 7.1 comes out you will be able to buy a boxed edition which will be much more polished. It will not have a personal and pro edition..it will just be a single 6 cd edition.
I am " the sparc " guy here in Oakland..I started working with Germany on this a few months ago (so take it easy on me ;).
Anyone who wishes to more info feel free to mail me and I shall also try to get that Sparc list kicking again...
I presume you saw my posting, as you say it certainly seems to be very stable, as I mentioned to Guy, the only problem I found seemd to be with YAST2 configuring SILO. It's a pretty well-rounded package even in it's four CD configuration, so I look forward to seeing 7.1 when it is released, any timescales? My only (current) query is what PCI network cards does it support, I tried an Asante DEC based card to no avail. I got my box for nothing, however I don't think I can get a SUN ethernet card on a similar deal!. I would like to use this box to replace my NT server (file and print) which is also running as a proxy/firewall to my cable modem connection. This is all on my home network!!. Just as a test I downloaded the BINARY for Setiathome and it ran first time. You don't by the way have a UK keymap for the console, KDE is fine it's just the console, but I suppose how often am I likely to want to type a UK pound symbol!!. As I said in my previous posting you guys have done a great job, your RC2 version is far in advance of what Red Hat are offering and Debian for that matter, not that I've tried Debian, I just got the impression from their web site that they have not got it together. I also downloaded Mandrake 7 beta, but what's the point SuSE works well and I prefer to stick with what I know (don't know really, I'm a year old newbie). Keep me posted with progress, if you want any field testing, I have the bandwidth to download and test.
