Does anyone know whether I can run SuSE Linux on a Sun (Sparc20)? Or, if not, is there a Linux distro for that platform? Maybe even FreeBSD? It's a small experiment we're setting up here. This could make Linux a lot more popular in my company (currently, I constantly have to defend it's use, despite of the overwelming performance and possiblities it created). There is a little-publised BETA of SuSE 7 for sparc that can be downloaded from ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/sparc/suse-us-sparc/ there are four ISO images you can download, if you dont' want the sources then you do not need the 4th disk. I am running this on an ultra30, however a friend has loaded it on a SPARC 10 without problem. The main problem I can find is that SILO when configured from within YAST2 does not get configured properly I would suggest you install using YAST1, in order to get a bootable system, then try YAST2 to adjust your configuration. Prior to SuSE I tested the Red Hat version for SPARC, but as that is only one disk, then the number of binary apps supplied is a lot less than SuSE. There is also a quiet (Dead) mailing list suse-sparc@suse.com although since the ISOs were only released on the 11th August, and not publised at than it is not surprising. Try searching the SuSE web sites, there is no mention of it. Have fun David Bottrill

Yes, we have a version of SuSE for Sparc based systems. It's labeled 7.0 but is our first step towards Sun hardware. It's pretty damn stable and if your system is 64 bit then you will be able to install a 64 bit system. 7.0 is only available through OEM's and from our FTP site. When 7.1 comes out you will be able to buy a boxed edition which will be much more polished. It will not have a personal and pro edition..it will just be a single 6 cd edition. I am " the sparc " guy here in Oakland..I started working with Germany on this a few months ago (so take it easy on me ;). Anyone who wishes to more info feel free to mail me and I shall also try to get that Sparc list kicking again... * Guy Van Sanden (sienix@flashmail.com) [000830 07:26]: -->Does anyone know whether I can run SuSE Linux on a Sun -->(Sparc20)? --> -->Or, if not, is there a Linux distro for that platform? -->Maybe even FreeBSD? --> -->It's a small experiment we're setting up here. I presume you saw my posting, as you say it certainly seems to be very stable, as I mentioned to Guy, the only problem I found seemd to be with YAST2 configuring SILO. It's a pretty well-rounded package even in it's four CD configuration, so I look forward to seeing 7.1 when it is released, any timescales? My only (current) query is what PCI network cards does it support, I tried an Asante DEC based card to no avail. I got my box for nothing, however I don't think I can get a SUN ethernet card on a similar deal!. I would like to use this box to replace my NT server (file and print) which is also running as a proxy/firewall to my cable modem connection. This is all on my home network!!. Just as a test I downloaded the BINARY for Setiathome and it ran first time. You don't by the way have a UK keymap for the console, KDE is fine it's just the console, but I suppose how often am I likely to want to type a UK pound symbol!!. As I said in my previous posting you guys have done a great job, your RC2 version is far in advance of what Red Hat are offering and Debian for that matter, not that I've tried Debian, I just got the impression from their web site that they have not got it together. I also downloaded Mandrake 7 beta, but what's the point SuSE works well and I prefer to stick with what I know (don't know really, I'm a year old newbie). Keep me posted with progress, if you want any field testing, I have the bandwidth to download and test.
