Howdy,
In ps -aux I always see about 7 copies of /usr/sbin/nscd running
Is that normal?
What is it anyway?

nscd = name service cache demon. It is a cache for the more common name service requests. Don't know how many should be running, I'd guess it would depend on how your system was set up. Take a look at the manual for nscd to learn more.
