Are you starting vmware with a preconfigured virtual machine? If so, it's possible that the files have become corrupted. Does vmware start OK if you don't load a virtual machine config file? If so that just about confirms your problem. I trust you have a functioning backup?
I recently had to change hard drive, but copied the win98.sk file from the old drive so I could use it again without reinstalling Win98 etc. But I haven't even got that far. Even if I start with the config wizard, creating a new virtual machine and virtual disk, it crashes as soon as I click Power ON, way before the Phoenix BIOS appears, where normally I would start to load the guest os. I was hoping to get it running, then replace the .dsk file with the one from my old drive, but as I say, I haven't even got VMWARE to pwer on a new machine.
I have a strange problem with VMWARE. I'm runnning SuSE 6.4 with all standard packages except for the xshared packaged which I downloaded from SuSE to cure the Netscape crashing problem. Now, every time I do click Power On in VMWARE the whole machine freezes, and I have to switch off, with the compulsory fsck at reboot on all partitions. I've never seen Linux, or any Unix, freeze like this. Any ideas?
