Hi, I have a strange problem with VMWARE. I'm runnning SuSE 6.4 with all standard packages except for the xshared packaged which I downloaded from SuSE to cure the Netscape crashing problem. Now, every time I do click Power On in VMWARE the whole machine freezes, and I have to switch off, with the compulsory fsck at reboot on all partitions. I've never seen Linux, or any Unix, freeze like this. Any ideas? Vmware runs setuid as root, which means it takes full root priviledges as it runs. It can do anything it likes, and so crashes that much harder when it goes down. It's crashed my machine a few times. Are you starting vmware with a preconfigured virtual machine? If so, it's possible that the files have become corrupted. Does vmware start OK if you don't load a virtual machine config file? If so that just about confirms your problem. I trust you have a functioning backup?

I recently had to change hard drive, but copied the win98.sk file from the old drive so I could use it again without reinstalling Win98 etc. But I haven't even got that far. Even if I start with the config wizard, creating a new virtual machine and virtual disk, it crashes as soon as I click Power ON, way before the Phoenix BIOS appears, where normally I would start to load the guest os. I was hoping to get it running, then replace the .dsk file with the one from my old drive, but as I say, I haven't even got VMWARE to pwer on a new machine.

Are you using the network modules? Try it without if you are. Have you tried removing your preferences file (from $HOME/.vmware? Have you removed vmware and rerun the installation script? Does it crash if you run it as root? Er, that about all I can think of at the moment!

I never run with the network modules. Tonight I'll try as root, and see what happens. What I don't understand is that it worked perfectly (albeit slowly) with the old hard drive, before I updated xshared. I haven't changed anything.
Er, that about all I can think of at the moment!
thanks for the tips. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
