Because MS are a lot smarter in the marketing dept than you give them credit for. They have done deals with computer manufacturers to bundle Office with new computers - it's difficult to get a new machine from a major supplier these days without MS Word 2000 on it.
Oh, when it comes to pure marketing these guys are the best, like it or not - there's no doubt about it. I'm also aware of their tactics and have been so for quite a while. I'm merely trying to make a point here: people upgrade without having to. A lot of folks that have an illegal copy of office 2000 installed just for the sake of it. This person I know has an older PC (200 MHz, 32Mb RAM) that's not very fast running window$. Yet she just had to install office 2000 because someone told her it's a great product. And what for? In order to write some papers you definitely don't need office 2000!
