RE: [SLE] Upgrading or waiting??
I'll upgrade when a major version is released. SuSE 7.0 sounds like a worthy step from 6.3. I agree with Juergen - when XFree4, Kernel 2.4 and KDE2 or Gnome Helix is in the release... Or even Easel... then I'll go for it - not because I can go from version software-2.4.3.6 from software-2.4.3.5 If you can update your machine by looking at the relevant ftp sites then there isn't a real reason to go to 6.4 from 6.3. I wonder how many people bought 6.4 because they had to have the latest version? :) And, why fix something that doesn't need fixing? If you have an answer, then you have too much time on your hands! Now where's the latest KDE2 binaries...... Kev

this is a question that can hardly be answered. If there are things that bug you do it. It's well worth. If you have a running system and are happy, so why?. I did update since many things changed since 6.2 and I felt it would be time for it. I'll do my next update for xfree 4.0, kernel 2.4.x and KDE 2.0. the sum will be worth the personal torture. Hope everything above will be in the next release.

I'll have to agree with Kevin on this one. One should consider upgrading the portions of a system that really need to be upgraded. For example, an application that needs bugfixes or if the new version of an application has useful features or better performance. It sure doesn't make much sense to have the latest version of, let's say, KDE if you never even use it. In reality a lot of folks upgrade just for the sake of it. Take for example m$ office; M$ word 97 has way more features than anyone would ever need, yet they bring out office2000, an office suite that has even more features that the majority probably will never use and requires even more resources. Yet I know a lot of folks have it on their PC's and so do a lot of companies. Why? On Wed, 17 May 2000, you wrote:

Because MS are a lot smarter in the marketing dept than you give them credit for. They have done deals with computer manufacturers to bundle Office with new computers - it's difficult to get a new machine from a major supplier these days without MS Word 2000 on it. Because companies buy these PCs and would rather use the shiny new software licensed with it instead of spending extra money on more licenses for software which is outdated, the new Office version starts to ingraining itself into the company. Because Office 2000 can read Office 97 files, everyone is happy. Only MS still hold the ace. Every upgrade they make, they change the file format, which means the people in a company who switch to the latest version when they get a new PC start producing documents which the others, on the older software, can't read. Over the period of a year or two, lots of the PCs get upgraded and the number of users of the new software reaches critical mass: the entire company must switch to the latest software. When the company switches over, pressure starts to build on other companies who want to share data. Their operating systems may crash a lot, and their applications may be prones to viruses, but you have to hand it to them: when it comes to wringing money out of locked in users, MS are second to none.

Oh, when it comes to pure marketing these guys are the best, like it or not - there's no doubt about it. I'm also aware of their tactics and have been so for quite a while. I'm merely trying to make a point here: people upgrade without having to. A lot of folks that have an illegal copy of office 2000 installed just for the sake of it. This person I know has an older PC (200 MHz, 32Mb RAM) that's not very fast running window$. Yet she just had to install office 2000 because someone told her it's a great product. And what for? In order to write some papers you definitely don't need office 2000! My point is that you should use your common sense before upgrading. -- Yatsen Ng yatsenng@casema.net It said "Needs Windows 98 or better." I think that education is the most important investment. That's the main reason why I chose Linux over M$ and am using it exclusively at home - though I have no choice at work. Mostly I prefer free software packages and am interested in learning more about programming. It seems that M$ isn't interested in educating the public about that sort of thing but are instead geared toward the marketing aspect. A lot of it seems unethical to me, especially after trying Linux and discovering just exactly what a great os and free software can do. With M$, you would pay good money just to do the ordinary things that one would take for granted should be included with the operating system (and would be) with Linux. Thank you GNU! :) Mark On Thu, 18 May 2000, Yatsen Ng wrote: | Oh, when it comes to pure marketing these guys are the best, like it or not - | there's no doubt about it. Yes. And in some way -as heared before on this thread- these people are multiplyers. All these illegal copies on private machines doesn't do much harm to M$. It's just another person pressing the boss to the next office release at work. ;-)
