What about Maximum Linux - is that a good bet as well? The reason why I'm asking is because my new employer will take care of two subscriptions of my choice. I'm fairly certain that the Linux Journal will be one of them. I just need to make up my mind about the second one.
I've stayed out of this conversation so far, but I think it's time to throw in my $0.02US. LJ is definitely the first choice; it's one of the most respected and broadest-spectrum journals in print. As a system administrator, SysAdmin is an excellent choice. Since I'm not an administrator, per se, many of the topics between the covers are a bit boring for me, but absolutely vital to someone who *needs* to care about things like backup and security. Good book. Linux Magazine has a great crew. They work hard to make sure that there is something in each issue for everyone, and I think they do a good job. I've read some very interesting articles in that magazine, including a kernel- hacking howto, and complete instructions for linking your Palm Pilot to your Linux box. Good stuff, but sometimes it's a little *light*-weight for people who've been watching Linux and GNU software intently for the last five or more years. Maximum Linux is one of my favorites, too. It's bi-monthly, and the subscriptions are a bit pricey considering this fact. Maximum Linux is really more geared towards the newbie and performance junkies like myself, and the content directly reflects this goal. It's great reading, but not that valuable. I've been a subscriber to Maximum PC since it was Boot (both subscriptions with CD-ROM), and Maximum Linux didn't let me down at all (I ordered my subscription two days after I read the first `official' issue).
From watching your posts and the things that come up, Yatsen, I'd recommend LJ and Linux Magazine. I think you'll get the most useful stuff out of this combination.
