Hi there, To any of you who are familiar with the numerous magazines out there: which (Linux) magazines would you recommend? From what I've seen/read so far I can say that I like the Linux Journal. Which other mags are worth reading as well? Is Linux Magazine a good bet? Thanks! -- Yatsen Ng yatsenng@casema.net It said "Needs Windows 98 or better." Linux Magazine is also good. The content can be light weight, but it covers some topics in greater depth than Linux Journal does. Getting both magazines is a winning combination. I subscribe to Linux Magazine. They have a more technical bend, regular contributors are, among others, Alessandro Rubini and Alan Cox. Linux Journal is lighter. I find some of the opinions expressed there a little uninformed sometimes, mostly from people desktop PC oriented. You should go to your local book store and browse them, see which one you like. Both of them are online too. -- Rafael -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
What about Maximum Linux - is that a good bet as well? The reason why I'm asking is because my new employer will take care of two subscriptions of my choice. I'm fairly certain that the Linux Journal will be one of them. I just need to make up my mind about the second one. -- Yatsen Ng yatsenng@casema.net It said "Needs Windows 98 or better." Maximum Linux is a great mag... But not a lot of tech goodies. It's more for the 'casual' user. Consumer Linux mag... That's a good way to describe it. I'm glad to see it, personally... But not a 'tech' magazine. "Michael H. Collins" wrote:

My second vote would go for Linux Magazine over Maximum Linux. I just don't like Maximum Linux enough to subscribe to it myself, but read an issue and see what you think Mark On Tue, 9 May 2000, Yatsen Ng wrote: | What about Maximum Linux - is that a good bet as well? I've stayed out of this conversation so far, but I think it's time to throw in my $0.02US. LJ is definitely the first choice; it's one of the most respected and broadest-spectrum journals in print. As a system administrator, SysAdmin is an excellent choice. Since I'm not an administrator, per se, many of the topics between the covers are a bit boring for me, but absolutely vital to someone who *needs* to care about things like backup and security. Good book. Linux Magazine has a great crew. They work hard to make sure that there is something in each issue for everyone, and I think they do a good job. I've read some very interesting articles in that magazine, including a kernel- hacking howto, and complete instructions for linking your Palm Pilot to your Linux box. Good stuff, but sometimes it's a little *light*-weight for people who've been watching Linux and GNU software intently for the last five or more years. Maximum Linux is one of my favorites, too. It's bi-monthly, and the subscriptions are a bit pricey considering this fact. Maximum Linux is really more geared towards the newbie and performance junkies like myself, and the content directly reflects this goal. It's great reading, but not that valuable. I've been a subscriber to Maximum PC since it was Boot (both subscriptions with CD-ROM), and Maximum Linux didn't let me down at all (I ordered my subscription two days after I read the first `official' issue).
From watching your posts and the things that come up, Yatsen, I'd recommend LJ and Linux Magazine. I think you'll get the most useful stuff out of this combination.

Thank you very much for taking the time to write such an elaborate and very helpful piece. And thanks to all of you for sharing your views on this issue. I've decided to subscribe to the Linux Journal and Linux Magazine. -- Yatsen Ng yatsenng@casema.net It said "Needs Windows 98 or better." What about Maximum Linux - is that a good bet as well? The reason why I'm asking
I have seen the first two issues of this magazine, and I believe it's too early to say whether this is a good magazine or not. The publisher of Maximum Linux is trying to break into what could easily be a profitable niche for them. This isn't necessarily bad. I think it will take three to four more issues before the editors and writers can find their "vision" to make the magazine different and shake off the newness of their content.
