This is exactly wat I mean: we are again trying to solve a problem with tricks&tips. This is not common knowledge, especially not with newbies. So: make the script/program. Rogier Samy Elashmawy wrote:
Are you using plian text passwords ? Some win95/98 use encrypted text paswords. You need to either diable encypted passwords or download and install the encryption stuff.
second , have you disabled the dummy network loopback device on the server ? When its enabled it can couse the network nieborhood to not show up.
Sorry I cant help more , I have only two M$ boxes and the other three are 100% linux.
Post more info here , ususaly someone will chime in , There are a bunch of net Admins lurking here , or go to www.samba.org and subscreibe to the mailing list.
And still then it is hard to do. I use swat too sometimes, but even if I do it with swat (which IS easier) I sometimes have no clue why my host doesn't show up in my network neighborhood or won't let me in. It takes some time puzzling it out and after a while, I get it working, but I can imagine some users not beeing able to create a simple share.

Okay then, why doesn't SuSE make a decent Samba-setup tool/script? I think this is not hard for someone who knows samba, and I'm sure it will help a lot of newbies and sysadmins to setup a Samba-server.
For instance, when I install Samba, I just want to share a directory. Not to browse the howto's -again- and read and read. I want to tell my box what its name is, its workgroup, what directory it should share and what the sharename should be. In the 'advanced' (well, maybe not that advaned), I want to be able to specify the rights, but I'd say: RO for the default sharing permissions, permissions on share-level.
Would this be an idea for the next release? (6.5 that is)
