Hello all, I have been experiencing some random lockups on my newly built Athlon machine. I installed from the 6.3 cdroms, and loaded the pentium optimized kernel. I this kernel safe for non-Intel cpu's?
My machine has locked up (and I mean locked up) when a: shutting down b: running some opengl stuff c: running Netscape (consistent) d: running make from inside emacs - locks when ld runs. (this happended a couple of times in a row. Hasn't happened yet when running make from bash)
One time, I had to manually run fsck to correct some errors. Another time, after rebooting, some files seemed to have reverted to a version about an hour old. (Still not quite sure how that happened. Surely, the disk caches are flushed out more often than that!)
This machine has not been really stable in either linux or win98, but before I entirely blame the hardware, I want to eliminate the simple.
I would check memory first if it is in any way unstable with another OS.
