[SLE] Pentium optimized Kernel safe for Athlon?
Hello all, I have been experiencing some random lockups on my newly built Athlon machine. I installed from the 6.3 cdroms, and loaded the pentium optimized kernel. I this kernel safe for non-Intel cpu's? My machine has locked up (and I mean locked up) when a: shutting down b: running some opengl stuff c: running Netscape (consistent) d: running make from inside emacs - locks when ld runs. (this happended a couple of times in a row. Hasn't happened yet when running make from bash) One time, I had to manually run fsck to correct some errors. Another time, after rebooting, some files seemed to have reverted to a version about an hour old. (Still not quite sure how that happened. Surely, the disk caches are flushed out more often than that!) This machine has not been really stable in either linux or win98, but before I entirely blame the hardware, I want to eliminate the simple. I don't know about the rest of your problems but I've found Netscape 4.72 so unstable and lockup-prone that I've abandon it. JLK On Sat, 25 Mar 2000, Raymond C. Maple wrote:

I would check memory first if it is in any way unstable with another OS. Check this out: http://reality.sgi.com/cbrady_denver/memtest86/ Good luck. -- Bob F EMail FBob@wt.net A Truly Wise Man Never Plays Leapfrog With A Unicorn... -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
As suggested, I downloaded the memtest86 program and ran it overnight - 9
hours straight with no errors. I think my memory is OK.
My system has locked up twice more now, both times during the ld stage of
compiling using make, and this time from the bash shell. It doesn't lock up
every time, however. I successfully recompiled and linked the same code
three or four times before the system locked up.
This is very disturbing, since I put this machine together as a development
machine! I can't afford to reboot running fsck every 20 minutes or so while
I am working!

This has all the hallmarks of an overheating CPU. Those Athlons really cook. The chip is happy while you're not stressing it, but when you start to do something complicated all those extra transistors start getting used and it overheats. Try running a gzip on a large file. I bet it dies every time! You might be able to prove the point by opening the case and pointing a desk fan into it at full blast. What you really need is a better CPU fan.

This is one reason I see a plausible future for Transmeta... their processors are almost as hot as bathwater, while Intel and AMD are making electronic frying pans. Guess what that means about power consumption... (Oh, and it also means you don't need a fan on the processor...) -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Actually, I use PPro optimizations on my Athlon workstation here and it's been extremely stable for me.
