It's not just a matter of the cost of the OS... The RA server is not cheap... I plan to try to get RA to donate a server to the EarthKAM project... I really feel bad that I'm excluding the Linux community, especially since I've been using Linux since the late 80s and truly LOVE what it stands for... However, I was able to put this WMP server together for the $99 cost of a Happaugue WinTV card... Every other piece of equipment in this Webcast has been donated to the EarthKAM project. EarthKAM lives mostly by corporate donations. If it wasn't for the generosity the companies like Sun, 3Com, Intel, IBM, just to mention a few, EarthKAM would not exist... It's sometimes challenging to say the least, fortunately many people believe in what EarthKAM is doing. We now have engaged over 10,000 students in classrooms around the world and we will continue to expand once we get our camera in the International Space Station. The fact that EarthKAM can excite young minds around the world to do science is what keeps me going... It's certainly NOT because of my salary!!! So I do the best I can the cheapest way I can with what we can get donated... Once again, I apologize for excluding the Linux community from the EarthKAM webcast, but I promise that I will do my best to have an alternative by EarthKAM's next mission. Thank you all very much for your support -- alann
I am curious as to how you can afford the most expensive version of the Windows OS ever to come out of Redmond, but you can't afford to download a free copy of any Linux ditro? JLK

Relax my friend.. You're interpreting this incorrectly. You can connect to our Webcast with any recent version of Windows Media Player that you can get to run on any Mac or PC. Also, I love Linux and as soon as I have a chance and funds will setup an RA server so that the Linux community can also view our Webcast. For the time being this all I have the time and funds to provide.

that you allow a connection only for W2K or IMac PC's to the streaming media at http://www.earthkam.ucsd.edu/~alopes/Webcast.html Users of other operating systems pay taxes too, you know, and much more than Bill Gates, who probably gets total write-offs. We also vote and until the Marxist turn this country into a one-party dictatorship let's at least have a semblence of fair play.
IMac has a very low market share and W2K isn't to be released until tomorrow, the 17th! Don't you want anyone to see what is happening?
What about a RealPlayer connection for Win95 or Linux? Let's level the playing field and stop allowing the 800 lb gorrilla to dictate terms.
