I am curious as to how you can afford the most expensive version of the Windows OS ever to come out of Redmond, but you can't afford to download a free copy of any Linux ditro? JLK alann lopes wrote:

that you allow a connection only for W2K or IMac PC's to the streaming media at http://www.earthkam.ucsd.edu/~alopes/Webcast.html Users of other operating systems pay taxes too, you know, and much more than Bill Gates, who probably gets total write-offs. IMac has a very low market share and W2K isn't to be released until tomorrow, the 17th! Don't you want anyone to see what is happening?
What about a RealPlayer connection for Win95 or Linux? Let's level the playing field and stop allowing the 800 lb gorrilla to dictate terms.

Perhaps you don't realize that RA servers cost money, more money in fact than a WM server? Even if the prices were EQUAL, there is a much greater customer-satisfaction return with WM, since I've yet to fire up RealPlayer without it saying "Hey, there's an update and I can't play without it". That must happen like twice a week, so if you had to choose one, even if it costs MORE, WM is the route to go from a customer-satisfaction standpoint. Hi Derek, I am well aware of Microsoft's attack on RealPlayer, modeled after their attack on Netscape. Another tatic to monopolize the internet, just like they monopolized the OS. I, for one, don't want to see M$ make the Internet their propriatary domain by default. If Alan were serious about leveling the playing field he could make his plight known and ask for dontations to create an RA server. I'd dontate. Wouldn't you? JLK "Derek J. Balling" wrote:

There's no "attack" on RealPlayer here actually. Fact -- RealNetworks makes their application the least user-friendly thing on the planet by constantly making it insist on upgrading itself. Fact -- RealNetworks has, from what I have been hearing, significantly increased their licensing costs over past years. This is ridiculous. M$ has a less than 1% stame in Apple. And M$ hates QT. No conspiracy theory here. In fact QuickTime Streaming Server is Open Source, supports rtp/rtsp ieee standards and has an open media format. I agree M$ is pretty close to evil. I used the word 'stake', not control. But neither you nor I know how much influence Bill Gates' $150M+ has had/is having in Apple's game plan. It may not be as much as I think it is but it certainly is not as little as you seem to imply. And the monopoly has already been proven in court. BTW, QuickTime is not open souce. And, even though it is supposed 'based' on QuickTime, we have no knowledge as to how broad that base is, since QuickTime code is propriatary. http://www.publicsource.apple.com/projects/streaming/

Actually I have contracted with Apple recently, and probably know a lot more about QTSS's roots than you think. More I cannot say, but I can say this: If you don't htink QTSS= Darwin Streamin Server then perhaps you should read the documentation a little better. Or perhaps you should sit at an OS X Server machine and compile it and compare the binaries. Or perhaps you should read the APSL. In fact if QTSS /doesn't/ = Darwin than Apple could be held legally accountable for breaking their own license. Sure M$'s monopoly has been proven in court. But the original poster was referring specifically to a situation where only QT and RP were supported- as if QT has a thing in the world to do with M$'s monopoly, other than signifigantly weakening it in the streaming media space (and practically preventing it in the desktop media space). And I can assure you that M$'s financial stake has virtually nothing to do with the influence they probably have with Apple. In fact I could name 5 or 6 acquaintences of mine that when put together have a slightly larger stake in Apple than MS. MS's influence over Apple centers around the fact that if Office were not produced for the MAc, Apple would face a huge challenge to their survuval. This is way OT. Whatever. I'm done. But I suggest you examine the situation first hand before you comment out of hand about something you have not personally dealt with. -mab On Thu, 17 Feb 2000, Jerry L Kreps wrote:

It's not just a matter of the cost of the OS... The RA server is not cheap... I plan to try to get RA to donate a server to the EarthKAM project... I really feel bad that I'm excluding the Linux community, especially since I've been using Linux since the late 80s and truly LOVE what it stands for... However, I was able to put this WMP server together for the $99 cost of a Happaugue WinTV card... Every other piece of equipment in this Webcast has been donated to the EarthKAM project. EarthKAM lives mostly by corporate donations. If it wasn't for the generosity the companies like Sun, 3Com, Intel, IBM, just to mention a few, EarthKAM would not exist... It's sometimes challenging to say the least, fortunately many people believe in what EarthKAM is doing. We now have engaged over 10,000 students in classrooms around the world and we will continue to expand once we get our camera in the International Space Station. The fact that EarthKAM can excite young minds around the world to do science is what keeps me going... It's certainly NOT because of my salary!!! So I do the best I can the cheapest way I can with what we can get donated... Once again, I apologize for excluding the Linux community from the EarthKAM webcast, but I promise that I will do my best to have an alternative by EarthKAM's next mission. Thank you all very much for your support -- alann
