To all suse-security members who replied .
I wont enable remote root logins (as advised).
I upgraded to PuTTY v0.56 and set the optons for Protocol 2.
Works fine now. Login as user and acquire root using su command.
Thanks for all your help.
Philip

I have obvioulsy missed some setting to permit remote logins using SSH.
It's not a bug, it's a feature. ;)
In general, it is no good idea to permit remote root login, it's better to login as a normal user and get root via the su command.
But if you really really want remote root login, try to set
PermitRootLogin yes
in /etc/ssh/sshd_config...
I cannot login remotely as any of the users either.
Did you try protocol 1 or protocol 2? Try to use protocol 2 (I'm not sure if putty supports it).
Michael.
