Remote Login to SuSE 9.1 via PuTTY / SSH
I have previously had a successful installation of SuSE 8.2, to which I could connect from a Windows machine running PuTTY using SSH. I could logon as root and administer the Linux machine from elsewhere on the network. I have rebuilt the Linux machine and installed SuSE 9.1. (I did not upgrade, but installed new). My windows machine can still establish a connection via PuTTY/ SSH but I get the following. login as: root Sent username "root" root@linux's password: Access denied I have obvioulsy missed some setting to permit remote logins using SSH. I cannot login remotely as any of the users either. Changes I made when installing were to use LVM to manage my hard disk volumes. I also changed the password encryption technique from the default since my previous password was stated to be too long for the default encryption method. Can anyone suggest where to look. Philip

It's not a bug, it's a feature. ;) In general, it is no good idea to permit remote root login, it's better to login as a normal user and get root via the su command. But if you really really want remote root login, try to set PermitRootLogin yes in /etc/ssh/sshd_config...

Did you try protocol 1 or protocol 2? Try to use protocol 2 (I'm not sure if putty supports it). Michael.
Dear all, Putty must be configured as follows for remote logins to any SuSE server (tried 9.0 Professional, 9.1 Professional, and 9.2): Category: Connection/SSH Protocol: 2 only Category: Connection/SSH/Auth Attempt "keyboard-interactive" For WinSCP, the same applies. Also, the PermitRootLogin should be set according to your security policy / guidelines. It is wise to be 'no' and normally one should not work on a system as root unless really needed (system administration business that need that privilege - package management, user management, etc). One special issue noted, if your password was typed wrong in the first attempt, please disconnect, reconnect and try again. Best regards, Sandu Mihai Michael Schachtebeck wrote:

To all suse-security members who replied .
I wont enable remote root logins (as advised).
I upgraded to PuTTY v0.56 and set the optons for Protocol 2.
Works fine now. Login as user and acquire root using su command.
Thanks for all your help.
Philip

Update to the latest version of PuTTY, older versions don't work with SSHD of SuSE 9.1. Markus -- __________________ /"\ Markus Gaugusch \ / ASCII Ribbon Campaign markus(at)gaugusch.at X Against HTML Mail / \
