I may be wrong or your gftp is newer than mine (which is gftp-2.0.8-104)
but:
gftp does not work with ssh2 sftp subsystem yet.
and the sftp support included is actually some wrapper using ssh (scp)
or an additional binary sftpserv, which is started after login throu ssh
in a transparent shell. (dont know whether I am technically correct
here)

other possible cause:
the server key has probably changed during install of the newest
version, and gftp wont answer the question: "hey, serverkey has changed,
could be man in the middle"

so check to login via ssh -2, check the sftpserv binary,
check some commandline client like sftp, and read
/usr/share/doc/packages/gftp/README

hope that helps,
lars
