Perhaps the update removed the read permission for group shadow from
/etc/shadow. Then xlock (which is probably setgid shadow) is no longer
able to verify the password. Try running SuSEconfig to reset the
permissions to the values specified in /etc/permissions* or change
them manually with chown and chmod.
