Something like that was in there before but that doesn't work well. Grub really should do the resolution detection itself, without the help of some script that mangles the config.
In my eyes that script didn't do enough, all it did was scale background to best fit proportions, it would be nice to make it with scalable fonts (ship with ttf font that is extracted into grub format after installation), SVG logo that gets rendered after installation etc, so it would fit it best. I understand that GRUB2 should have options like that built in, but things like Plymouth that are infinitely more advanced can't even handle one piece of SVG, so I doubt GRUB will gain that ability anytime soon. In the meantime it would be nice to at least try to make it work with what we have.
