I'm surprised. I thought that both were replaced with joe years ago. The reasoning was, IIRC, that it was smaller and usable by novices. Maybe the idea is to use 'mcedit' now?
It is not so much about mcedit, I would say. mc(edit), much like nc, is quite focused on Fx keys and the classic 6-key Home/End block, which is the set of keys that has been most messed up layout-wise by manufacturers over the past 15 years on both ~84-key and ~104-key keyboards.
