Absolutely. Mentoring will be crucial to get new people involved and up to
the level where they can help out with core issues. Basically, if a
maintainer says 'I have no time for mentoring' he's shooting himself in the
foot because that way, you never will.

Warning: it can be legit... Imagine coolo; asking him to take 1 hour a
day for mentoring... to help a potential maintainer and at the end of
3 months everyone realizes it was a wasted effort. People like him
hold the world on their shoulders, 1 hour is probably asking too much
already ;)

So it's probably not that straight forward. But if everything works
OK, then after some time he could have someone to relly to share the
load (of work, not something else).

Yes, the mentoring part will always be a dangerous part.
