The problem is not the font itself but the entire pango framework, which is not that small.
I wonder why though. We don't need to render fancy articles and layouts, especially not in initrd. We are talking about a single (english) sentence at most here. So for that simply using freetype directly to render the text into a buffer should suffice, right?
