I would prefer 12 months. It takes too long to upgrade, recompile everything missing, and to get generally going again. More importantly, I would really like to see a finished product (to use the managerese) which has problems fixed, rather than the "it's released, therefore it's history and I don't care anymore" and the "release dates must be kept - let's hope we can get at least the critical ones fixed". I myself don't care if it's 3 months late, as long as it works really well.
