Run mozilla and try ls -l $HOME/.mozilla/$USER*/*/lock. OK, it's a PID symlink, but I think the idea is the same? Some applications just don't like multiple instances.

In many cases, you're better off using the shutdown script or pkill if you must be rude. (I know about killall, but that has different meanings in different places.)
Indeed, but you have to realise that using "pkill" kills processes by name. Using the above method is, umm, much more specific. When you say "killall", you actually mean "killall5". Cough. Cough.
