Ok, on RedHat7.2 it would seem you can create usernames with capital letters and they can be longer than 8 characters.
I'd suggest you avoid capitals like the plague. It makes life much easier with all sorts of things if everything is always in one case, and lower case is more compatible with Unix commands.
_If_ I create users with more than 8 characters is it going to screw up things along the road - Samba?
I suggest ten - it works with all our systems.
