User names & password issues
Ok, on RedHat7.2 it would seem you can create usernames with capital letters and they can be longer than 8 characters. _If_ I create users with more than 8 characters is it going to screw up things along the road - Samba? Windows/Linux issues? I'm thinking of a sensible naming policy for a school. More than 8 characters would be nice I guess - but not if it'll mean having to perform workarounds later. ---- Secondly, how can I tell RedHat user manager to allow null passwords, or short passwords? There are some accounts that I don't want a password for. Cheers all -- Mat __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE video emails in Yahoo! I'd suggest you avoid capitals like the plague. It makes life much easier with all sorts of things if everything is always in one case, and lower case is more compatible with Unix commands.

I suggest ten - it works with all our systems. If you don't have BBCs or Archimedes you may be able to go for more than ten, but AFAIK ten works with all systems except older Linux, where 8 was the limit. -- Christopher Dawkins, Felsted School, Dunmow, Essex CM6 3JG 01371-822698/821076 or 07798 636725 cchd@felsted.essex.sch.uk

IIRC certain versions of Windows can get confused where shares are more than 8 characters. Also Windows assumes that share names are not case senstitive. -- Mark Evans St. Peter's CofE High School Phone: +44 1392 204764 X109 Fax: +44 1392 204763
