For the time being, do you have xf86-input-synaptics installed? If not, give it a try.
Bingo! But it was the other way around: xf86-input-synaptics (which seems to be obsolete), was installed. So I just removed the configuration file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/70-synaptics.conf and now it works. Maybe the whole issue was caused because this was an update. Not sure if the driver would also have been installed by a fresh installation.
So feel free to resolve this one as FIXED, WORKSFORME or even INVALID.
