I can reproduce this on a fresh installation.
It's a gstreamer "problem" though, gst-play isn't able to play mp3 files
either.
The reason is simply that there's no gstreamer mp3 decoder available.
Install gstreamer-fluendo-mp3 from repo-non-oss (or
gstreamer-plugins-bad-orig-addon from Packman if you prefer), and it should
work.
Of course installing and using phonon-backend-vlc should help too...
Reassigning to GNOME, I have no idea whether gstreamer-fluendo-mp3 is supposed
to be installed by default, or whether gstreamer is supposed to be shipped with
mp3 support (via mpg123) in 42.3...
